The paper “Toward High Thermal‑Hydraulic Performance of Heat Exchangers for Water‑Gravel Thermal Energy Storage” is directly relevant to INTERSTORES, as it addresses the optimisation of large-scale water‑gravel seasonal thermal energy storage (sTES) systems. Using COMSOL Multiphysics, the authors developed a coupled thermo‑hydraulic model to evaluate and optimise heat exchanger layout, flow conditions, and thermal‑to‑hydraulic performance at the INTERSTORES in‑campus demo site. The study demonstrates how multi-level configurations, orientation, and flow management improve both thermal efficiency and reduce pumping work. The methodology provides a replicable framework for designing, simulating, and optimising sTES, supporting INTERSTORES’ objectives in performance enhancement, cost-effective deployment, risk mitigation, and replication across sites. Overall, it bridges simulation with practical design, reinforcing INTERSTORES’ demonstration and dissemination goals
